*The Constitution of the Republic of Estonia guarantees its citizens freedom of conscience and religion, freedom to choose what they do and where they live; nature has given us freedom of thought. This adds up to a lot of freedom. Perhaps there can even be too much freedom? If my understanding of freedom starts to take away from my freedom, is apologising for it simply enough, or do we need to take time out and set those boundaries again? In the animal kingdom, the lion symbolises freedom. A majestic, primordially powerful, wise and faithful animal, who features in heroic stories, on the national coats of arms , and on the logos of sports teams. At the same time, it is known that almost half of the lion population across the world spends its days captivated in cages. Quite far from what they are supposed to symbolize.
Can freedom only be truly perceived when it is taken away? Is the cage something that confines our physical body or is it something that's in our heads? Is freedom possibly dangerous?
What does a zoo lion in a cage expect from us? Freedom or apology?
The production was created in cooperation between Tartu New Theatre and Vanemuine.
